Chapter 70: Eye of the Dragon, Part 1 (A Midnight Toll)

Release date: April 21st, 2014

Word count: (37,752 out of 69,887 words total)

Thoughts: I debated whether to make one entry for Chapter 70 or split it in two. I read Wish-chan's blog post about this chapter's release and she was the one who posted the two halves on different dates in the first place. So I'll respect the FF design, which also allows me to spotlight two fanarts instead of one.

Part 1 is called "A Midnight Toll". I don't remember much about this chapter other than the Alliance being in shock that Sakura died, us learning the truth and Syaoran's test to become Great Elder (gosh, there's something so hilarious about a 17-year-old Great Elder).

Eron was ready to do anything to bring Sakura back. He literally said, "Whatever it takes". Avengers fans may remember that was the slogan for Endgame! And it was also the catchphrase of Degrassi, a beloved Canadian teen soaps that was around since the 80s to 2016.

It's quite convenient that Fujitaka was out of town during all of this. And that it happened in the middle of spring break so the classmates are none the wiser either. While it's easy to whisk Fujitaka away, it must have taken so much planning on Wish-chan's part to not only bring them to this point of time physically but mentally as well.

There was a random new report about how cherry blossom season was late. I probably didn't think much about it at the time, but I love the reason why Wish-chan delayed it in this chapter other than the fact that the Insect was being a major pest.

It's been established that no great sorcerer leaves their body behind after death. So why didn't the Great Elder make arrangements for his body? I guess he was in the care of people who cremated him and scattered his ashes in the sea.

Ouu, the scene where Kai was trying to convince Meilin to move into him was so sexy! That boy has all the moves and it's fun that Wish-chan gets to play with a character who isn't as dense as Sakura or formal as Syaoran.

So now we get a line that Sakura changed into her dress right before the party. I knew that there would be a mention! Wish-chan's fanart is absolutely gorgeous. I would make it the cover art for this post but chronologically it technically happens during Chapter 69!

There are some DIY videos of the Rodarte star pin that Syaoran gave Sakura. I would love to make that as one of my New Trials craft projects!!

Boy, Meilin has such a love complex life. Not only does her engagement gets broken in elementary school but she gets two proposals while still in high school! Her best line of the chapter: "Why do I only attract creepy stalker idiots? I wish I can just have a nice, normal boy for a change.”

It's really interesting to see how the Li Delegation couldn't care less about the Insect wreaking havoc once their business in Japan was over. After all this time of wanting Syaoran to be Card Master, now that he's got the title they don't care about his responsibilities.

Syaoran lost track of time when he wielded the Time for Sakura to create her clone. I wonder if we ever find out how long it actually took, considering how draining that card actually is.

Wish-chan gives a shout out to Madhouse animations. How meta!

Fanart spotlight: In Mesel's fantastic series of Kai and Meilin moments, she drew a picture of Meilin and Kai arguing in front of the Li Mansion. I wasn't able to remember it until this chapter and it's heartbreaking. Meilin suffered the most not only because she lost Sakura but her most important person betrayed her. I'm really glad that she got some decent airtime in this chapter because it's a lot to process.
